Chelation Study for Autism Called Off

September 19, 2008.  The National Institute of Mental Health stated investigators would not go forward with a trial of chelation therapy.   The study had previously been approved and now they have reversed their decision stating, "The Board determined that there was no clear evidence for direct benefit to children who would participate in chelation trial and that the study presents more than a minimal risk."
Rebecca Estepp of the autism support group Talk About Curing Autism stated, "We are dumbfounded and saddened that this study of a promising autism treatment will not happen.  The government has pulled the rug out from under us with no explanation."

Dr.Ron's comment:  "It is difficult to say much about this except one would expect the NIMH to have a clearer answer as to why they decided not to go ahead with this study.  The other side of the coin is that chelation therapy has little true scientific findings to support it yet I have had cardiac patients who swear by the treatment.  The jury remains out on this one."

Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber

AAA has just acquired a new Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber and will be accepting clients as soon as Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008.  This Chamber is 33.5 inches in diameter and about 8 foot long, a child and parent can fit in comfortably.  While in the Chamber one may watch a DVD or listen to music or take a naps.  We will be using the chamber for research with Aspergers Syndrome, treating Aspergers clients as well as any client in the Autisic Spectrum Disorder group; we will also treat many other disorders and illnesses such as heart attacks, strokes, fibromyalgia, diabetic neuropathy, post surgical clients, and other illnesses.
This is great news for AAA and all of us at AAA are very excited about our new Chamber.

International Child & Adolescent Teachers Conference

Dr. Porter and I just returned from a wonderful conference in the frozen north, Minneapolis, Mn. where we both had two hour sessions with teachers; we presented the Asperger child, the characteristics and how teachers can improve their educational programs with these very special children.  There were many interactions, questions and answers, different presentation styles and support.  Very positive result.
Both Dr. Porter and Dr. Knaus have important information for teachers; understanding and having new techniques for interventions with this special group is a very valuable package of knowledge for all teachers and especially the 'Special Education" teacher.
Dr. Porter is already preparing an educational format for teachers and we will be working with our Tampa Bay teachers over the next few months.  Stay warm.
